My Journey of Hope

How Did I Get Here?

Hey! I’m Alison Langtry, from the UK. I was the kind of person with a full professional diary and another calendar hanging at home filled with social dates. It was 2005, and I had just regained consciousness in hospital, having survived a horrific assault. A double blow to my head resulted in a black eye and a misaligned jaw that needed stitching, and I was surrounded by “angels”.

The headaches started within 6 months every time I stood up, coupled with dizziness and nausea. The odd thing? The National Health Service (NHS) refused to check me for concussion. Then, they denied that I had hypopituitarism despite private lab tests to prove it. I guess they didn’t want to foot the bill for ongoing life-saving medication.

It Gets Worse Before it Gets Better

In 2010, I caught Lyme Disease due to being a pet-lover (fleas) with a failing immune system. More rejections from the NHS. So, it was goodbye to career, home, savings, and social life. Friends started to dwindle. I don’t blame them; they became friends with a business-driven socialite, which I could no longer be. I hit rock bottom.

My life improved slowly when I realised the NHS would never help me. When I was most scared of my symptoms, I had a visitation in a dream telling me I would be ok, but that story is for another time. I started to help myself reclaim as much health as possible, and a big part of that was keeping my mind in a positive place.

Healing, Connections and a Positive Attitude

Creating connections with people who had similar experiences became paramount. I initially joined social media groups until I decided to make my own “tribe.” And so, Housebound Friends began – a small virtual haven where individuals with disabilities could find companionship, resources, and empowerment.

Our tribe ranges from those with chronic illnesses to individuals navigating physical disabilities, all seeking solace and camaraderie in our understanding community. Ten years of Hermitude later, I decided to create a blog and courses.

Whatever you are facing, I wish you the very best and that you will somehow be “ok”. Remember the most important thing is to accept where you are, but strive for something better.
